

Irish Soda Bread

Irish Soda Bread

Ingredients
3 1/2 cups all purpose flour
1/2 tsp salt
3/4 tsp baking soda
1 1/2 cups buttermilk
Directions
- Preheat oven to 450° F.
- In a large bowl, sift together the flour, salt and baking soda.
- Make a well in the center.
- Pour in the buttermilk.
- Using your hands, mix in the flour from the sides of the bowl.
- The dough should be soft, but not wet and sticky.
- If the dough is too dry or crumbly, add 1 to 2 more tablespoons of buttermilk.
- Turn out the dough onto a well-floured work surface.
- Wash and dry your hands.
- Knead lightly for a few seconds.
- Form the dough into a round ball.
- Place on a greased baking sheet.
- Sprinkle the top with flour.
- Use a sharp knife to cut a deep cross into the top-center of the dough.
- Bake for 15 minutes.
- Reduce the oven temperature to 400° F.
- Bake for 30 more minutes, or until the top is golden-brown and the bottom sounds hollow when tapped.
- Let bread cool for 15 minutes.
- Serve warm.
